“Being an Entrepreneur sucks!” This was how this young entrepreneur felt who was a panelist talking to recent graduates who were considering starting their own business. It was quite a startling remark since he was there to talk to attendees who were interested in becoming “start-ups” either as business owners or independent contractors. This panelist was a business owner!
I was also a panelist and although I understood why he made this “startling remark” to aspiring entrepreneurs, it was apparent that things were not going well for him and his business and he was feeling overwhelmed. Which is not unusual for entrepreneurs.
I have been a business owner for many years and worked with and for other business owners for many years as well. It takes a lot of perseverance, stamina, strength and just plain guts to go it alone. Having a partner can at times make it even more difficult.
Whoever told you that having and running your own shop was a snap lied to you. BUT it does not have to include pain and suffering – at least not all of the time. There are ways to make it not suck – again – at least not all of the time. Perhaps being an entrepreneur is not for you. You have to be honest with yourself before you start and not be misled by what appears to be the success of another business owner. Just as this entrepreneur at first presented himself as a successful business owner having a great time until admitting that “being an entrepreneur sucks”, there are ways to avoid this awful feeling or a least be prepared for it and know how to deal with it. I’ll discuss a few of these ways in my next newsletter.
